Rush Limbaugh claimed on his April 17 show that 96% of the American people don't care about gun control:
"The American people don't care. Nearly 100%, 96% of the American people do not think gun control is an important problem. This is all being driven by the left, by the media, by Obama, by government. This is a complete disconnect between the federal government and the people. The federal government is hell-bent on gun control. Ninety-six percent of the American people don't care about it.
Limbaugh is referring to a new Gallup poll which asked participants the following open-ended question:
What do you think is the most important problem facing this country today?
Respondents were permitted one answer. As many people are still concerned about unemployment and the economy, those issues rose to the top.
This poll does not by any stretch of the imagination indicate that Americans "don't care" about guns in the wake of recent mass killings.
Unless your imagination stretches as far as Limbaugh's.
